Claiming Tax Refunds in Japan
Eligibility
To qualify for a tax refund in Japan, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a non-resident visitor with a valid passport and visa (if applicable).
- Have made a single-day purchase of ¥5,000 or more (excluding tax) from a single store.
- The purchased items must be general merchandise, such as clothing, electronics, or souvenirs.
Procedure
- Inquire at the store. Ask the shop assistant if they offer tax refund services. Not all stores participate in the tax refund program.
- Present your passport and make the purchase. You will be required to show your passport at the time of purchase so that the store can verify your non-resident status.
- Receive a tax refund form. Upon payment, you will be given a tax refund form called the “Tax-Free Shopping Receipt.” This form contains important details such as the amount of tax refunded and the store’s information.
- Present the form at the airport customs office. When departing Japan, present your Tax-Free Shopping Receipt to a customs officer at the airport.
- Have the form validated. The customs officer will validate your form and create a duplicate copy for their records.
- Show the original form to the duty-free counter. Go to the duty-free counter and present the original Tax-Free Shopping Receipt.
- Receive your refund. You will receive your tax refund in the currency of your choice.
Note:
- The minimum purchase amount of ¥5,000 excludes consumption tax (VAT).
- Consumption tax in Japan is currently 10%.
- The tax refund process can take some time at the airport, so it is recommended to arrive early for your departure.
