According to the Bundesbank’s 2023 payment study, cash remains the predominant payment method for small-value purchases, such as daily groceries and public transportation tickets. This preference stems from a deeply ingrained habit among Germans, who find cash to be a convenient and trustworthy way to manage their finances.

However, the convenience of cashless methods is gaining traction in Germany. Digital payment options, such as contactless cards, mobile wallets, and online banking, are becoming increasingly prevalent. This shift is driven by a growing number of Germans who appreciate the ease and security of digital transactions.

The rise of e-commerce has further contributed to the popularity of cashless payments. Online retailers often prefer cashless methods for their efficiency and reduced transaction costs. As a result, consumers are becoming more accustomed to using digital payment platforms for online purchases.

Despite the increasing adoption of cashless methods, Germany is not yet on the verge of becoming a completely cashless society.
