Vietnam’s Internet Infrastructure: A Mixed Bag

Vietnam’s internet infrastructure demonstrates a contrasting picture. Fixed broadband access ranks a commendable 39th globally, while mobile internet speed trails somewhat behind and has recently declined in international comparisons. This disparity highlights aspects that require attention for future advancements.

Fixed broadband access in Vietnam has made significant strides, achieving a global ranking among the top 50. This is primarily attributed to the government’s initiatives to expand fiber optic networks and provide high-speed internet connectivity to urban areas. However, the availability and affordability of fixed broadband services remain limited in rural and remote regions.

In contrast, mobile internet speed in Vietnam has experienced a downturn in international comparisons. The country’s mobile internet speed has slipped in recent years, and it now ranks lower than some of its regional peers. This decline may be due to factors such as network congestion, inadequate infrastructure, and limited spectrum allocation.

The disparity between fixed and mobile internet speeds underscores the need for targeted investments and improvements in mobile infrastructure. Increasing the mobile network capacity, expanding fiber backbone networks, and exploring new technologies like 5G can address connectivity bottlenecks and enhance mobile internet performance throughout the country.

The Vietnamese government has recognized the importance of internet infrastructure and has taken steps to improve connectivity.
