Understanding Thailand’s Visa Exemption Policy

Thailand’s tourist visa exemption program allows foreign visitors to enter the country multiple times within a specified period. However, the number of entries permitted varies depending on the method of entry and country of origin.

Visa Exemptions for Land and Sea Borders

For visitors entering Thailand via land or sea borders, the visa exemption grants two (2) entries per calendar year. This applies to citizens of all countries except Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore.

Exceptions for Neighboring Countries

Citizens of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore enjoy more frequent visa-free entry into Thailand. They are permitted to enter via land or sea borders up to two (2) times per calendar month. This increased allowance is due to the close proximity and frequent cross-border travel between these countries.

Duration of Stay

Regardless of the number of entries permitted, the length of stay under the visa exemption is limited to 30 days per visit. Visitors who wish to stay longer than 30 days must apply for an appropriate visa before entering Thailand.

Lost or Exhausted Entries

If a visitor accidentally loses their passport or exhausts their visa-free entries for the year, they must apply for a visa extension or departure visa at the nearest Thai embassy or consulate. Failure to obtain the necessary extension may result in overstay fines or even deportation.
