Can Shinkansen Tickets Be Changed?

Traveling by Shinkansen, Japan’s high-speed bullet train, is a convenient and efficient way to explore the country. However, it’s important to understand the rules regarding ticket changes in case of unforeseen circumstances.

The flexibility of Shinkansen ticket changes depends on the type of reservation made. There are two main types: reserved seats and unreserved seats.

Reserved Seats

Reserved seats provide a guarantee of a specific seat on a specific train. These tickets allow for changes, but the following conditions apply:

  • Before departure: Changes can be made up to 14 days in advance.
  • After departure: Changes can be made only if the original train is delayed or canceled.

To make changes to a reserved seat ticket, passengers must visit a JR ticket office or contact the Japan Rail Pass Call Center. A change fee of 510 yen per ticket is typically charged.

Unreserved Seats

Unreserved seat cars, known as “jiyuseki”, offer more flexibility. These tickets do not guarantee a specific seat but allow passengers to sit in any available unreserved seat within the car. Unreserved seat tickets can be used on any train on the day of purchase.

As there are no specific seat reservations for unreserved seats, changes are not necessary. Passengers can simply board any available unreserved seat car on the train of their choice.

Additional Notes

  • All ticket changes must be made before the original departure time.
  • If a passenger misses their original train with a reserved seat ticket, they will need to purchase a new ticket for the next available train.
  • Passengers using a Japan Rail Pass can make reservations for reserved seats in advance. However, changes to these reservations are subject to the same rules as regular tickets.

By understanding these ticket change rules, travelers can ensure a smooth and hassle-free Shinkansen experience.
