Can we use a credit card for MTR Hong Kong?
Contactless Payment Options Now Available on Hong Kong MTR
Starting August 24, 2024, commuters on Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) will have the convenience of using contactless Mastercard and UnionPay credit cards (excluding UnionPay debit cards) to pay for their fares. Additionally, they can also use compatible payment-enabled devices at designated readers throughout the MTR system.
This enhancement represents a significant improvement in the MTR’s payment infrastructure, as it expands the range of payment options available to passengers. Previously, Visa was the only accepted card payment method.
Passengers can now tap their contactless Mastercard or UnionPay credit cards, or their compatible payment-enabled devices, at designated readers located at all MTR stations and on-board trains. The payment process is swift and seamless, allowing commuters to breeze through turnstiles and onto trains without any hassle.
This new payment option is expected to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers, as it provides greater flexibility and convenience. It also aligns with Hong Kong’s drive towards becoming a more technologically advanced and cashless society.
For passengers who do not have contactless Mastercard or UnionPay credit cards, or compatible payment-enabled devices, traditional payment methods such as cash and Octopus cards will still be accepted.
The MTR advises passengers to check the designated readers at each station for specific payment options.
