Can you get a train from Vietnam to Laos?
Currently, there is no train operating directly between Laos and Vietnam.
However, there are a couple of railway projects underway that are expected to connect the two countries in the future:
Vung Ang – Tan Ap – Mu Gia railway line: This is a part of the Laos – Vietnam railway project, connecting Vung Ang Port (Ha Tinh, Vietnam) with Thakhek district (Khammouane, Laos). This project is under construction and expected to be completed in 2028.
Vientiane – Vung Ang railway line: This is a longer railway line connecting Vientiane, the capital of Laos, with Vung Ang Port. This project is still in the research and planning stage.
Alternatively, you can travel by train from Laos to Vietnam via China:
Laos – China railway line: This high-speed railway line was inaugurated in 2021, connecting Vientiane with Kunming (China). From Kunming, you can take a train to Vietnamese border provinces such as Lao Cai or Hanoi.
In summary, while there is no direct train from Laos to Vietnam at present, traveling by rail between the two countries will become more convenient in the near future thanks to the ongoing projects.
