Shinkansen Luggage Policy: Pre-Booking Required for Oversized Items

The Shinkansen, Japan’s renowned high-speed rail network, has implemented new luggage policies effective May 2020. These policies require passengers to pre-book space for oversized luggage that exceeds certain dimensions.

Oversized Luggage Requirements

Previously, passengers could bring oversized luggage onto the Shinkansen without restrictions. However, the new policy now requires pre-booking for items with combined dimensions exceeding 160 cm (length + width + height). This includes large suitcases, backpacks, and other bulky items.

Pre-Booking Procedure

To pre-book space for oversized luggage, passengers should contact Japan Railways (JR) directly. Bookings can be made through the JR website, phone, or at designated ticket counters. Passengers will be required to provide details about the dimensions and weight of their luggage.

Fees and Restrictions

There is no additional charge for pre-booking oversized luggage space on the Shinkansen. However, the following restrictions apply:

  • Maximum weight: 30 kg
  • Maximum combined dimensions: 160 cm
  • Only two pieces of oversized luggage are allowed per passenger
  • Pre-booking must be made at least 24 hours before departure

No Space for Unbooked Oversized Luggage

Passengers who fail to pre-book space for oversized luggage may not be allowed to bring the items onto the Shinkansen. JR recommends that passengers make reservations well in advance, especially during peak travel periods, to avoid inconvenience.

Smaller Luggage

Smaller luggage items that fit within the designated overhead luggage racks or under the seat are not subject to pre-booking requirements. Passengers are advised to pack light and use suitcases that are easy to maneuver.

The implementation of these new luggage policies aims to enhance safety and comfort for all Shinkansen passengers. By pre-booking oversized luggage, passengers can ensure that they have adequate space for their belongings and that the train operates smoothly and efficiently.
