Is the Auto Train Worth It? A Personal Perspective on Riding the Rails with Your Car

The lure of bypassing a grueling multi-day drive, especially with kids or pets, is strong. That’s the promise of Amtrak’s Auto Train, whisking you and your vehicle between Lorton, Virginia (just outside of Washington, D.C.) and Sanford, Florida (near Orlando). But is this unique travel experience worth the price tag? Having recently taken the plunge and opted for a roomette, I can offer a firsthand perspective.

For me, the answer is a resounding yes, particularly if you factor in the true cost of driving. Consider gas, wear and tear on your vehicle, meals on the road, and the value of your time (and sanity). Suddenly, the Auto Train’s price becomes more competitive.

My experience was greatly enhanced by choosing a roomette. While coach seats are available, and certainly a more budget-friendly option, the added privacy and comfort of the roomette elevated the journey significantly. Having a dedicated space to stretch out, recline, and simply relax made the 17-hour trip far more enjoyable. The roomette transforms during the overnight journey, with the two seats converting into a comfortable lie-flat bed, and an upper berth folding down for a second sleeping space.

While I wouldn’t say I slept perfectly – the gentle rocking and occasional train noises took some getting used to – it was significantly better than attempting to sleep upright in a car or battling traffic fatigue on the highway. The provided amenities, including pillows, blankets, and turndown service, contributed to a more restful experience. The roomette also includes access to a private restroom and shower facilities, a major plus over the communal restrooms in coach.

Dining is included in the price of your ticket, regardless of your accommodation choice. While the meals weren’t gourmet, they were perfectly acceptable and offered a welcome break from packing snacks or searching for roadside restaurants. The communal dining experience also added a social element to the trip.

Of course, the real magic of the Auto Train is the convenience. Driving onto the train in the afternoon and waking up close to your destination, refreshed and ready to explore, is truly invaluable. The time saved, the stress avoided, and the novelty of the experience all contribute to its appeal.

Would I take the Auto Train again? Absolutely. The splurge on a roomette made the trip even more enjoyable and is something I’d highly recommend, especially for families or those seeking a more comfortable and private experience. While it’s not the cheapest travel option, the convenience, comfort, and unique experience make it a worthwhile investment, especially when considering the hidden costs of driving.
