Updated K-ETA Requirements for Entry into Korea

Effective December 31, 2024, the Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) will become mandatory for all travelers seeking entry into the Republic of Korea.

What is K-ETA?

K-ETA is an online visa waiver system that allows eligible travelers from visa-exempt countries to obtain pre-approval for their entry into Korea. It is a simple and convenient process that can be completed online.

Who Needs a K-ETA?

All travelers, regardless of their nationality, who do not require a visa to enter Korea must obtain a K-ETA. This includes citizens of countries that have visa-free agreements with Korea.

How to Apply for a K-ETA

To apply for a K-ETA, travelers must visit the official K-ETA website and complete an online application. The application process typically takes a few minutes and requires the following information:

  • Personal details (name, passport number, etc.)
  • Travel itinerary (dates of stay, flight information)
  • Contact information (email address, phone number)

When to Apply for a K-ETA

Travelers are advised to apply for their K-ETA as far in advance of their trip as possible, preferably within 72 hours of departure. Applicants will receive an email notification within a few hours or days once their application has been processed.

Consequences of Not Obtaining a K-ETA

Failure to obtain a K-ETA prior to arrival in Korea may result in:

  • Denied boarding on flights or ferries departing for Korea
  • Refusal of entry into Korea

Important Note:

The K-ETA requirement will only apply to travelers entering Korea on or after December 31, 2024. Until then, travelers from visa-exempt countries are not required to obtain a K-ETA.
