The Acela operates along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Boston and Washington, D.C., a 457-mile journey traversing major cities like New York City and Philadelphia. However, the coveted 150 mph speed is currently limited to a mere 34-mile stretch in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and a 16-mile segment in New Jersey, totaling just 50 miles of the entire route. The rest of the journey sees the Acela operating at significantly lower speeds, often constrained by aging infrastructure, curves, and congestion.

Further planned infrastructure improvements along the NEC aim to increase the sections where 160mph operation is possible, eventually leading to faster overall journey times.

Future investments and upgrades are crucial to unlocking this potential and bringing the US closer to the high-speed rail experiences enjoyed in other parts of the world.
