Can You Use MTR Without an Octopus Card?
The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in Hong Kong offers a convenient and efficient way to travel around the city. While the Octopus card is widely accepted as a payment method on the MTR, there are alternative options for passengers who do not have one.
First-Class Train Travel
For first-class train travel, passengers are required to provide proof of fare payment. Acceptable forms of payment include:
- Single journey ticket
- Octopus card
- Contactless bank card
- QR code ticket (displaying first-class selection)
Passengers must be prepared to show their proof of payment to a designated inspector upon request. Failure to provide valid proof may result in a fine.
Other Forms of Payment
For standard-class train travel, passengers can also use the following payment methods in addition to the ones mentioned above:
- Stored Value Ticket (SVT)
- Mobile ticketing apps (e.g., MTR Mobile, AlipayHK, WeChat Pay HK)
Contactless Bank Card Payment
Contactless bank cards from most major credit and debit card networks are accepted on the MTR. Simply tap your card on the designated reader at the fare gates to enter or exit the station.
QR Code Ticket
QR code tickets can be purchased online or at MTR stations. To use a QR code ticket, scan the code at the fare gates using the MTR Mobile app or a dedicated QR code reader.
Note:
- When using contactless bank cards or mobile ticketing apps, ensure that the card or device is enabled for contactless payment.
- Some MTR stations may not have all payment options available.
